NATAL, Brazil — It began with the magical. It ended with the miraculous.

John Brooks, a 21-year-old German-American making his competitive debut for the United States, who was on the field only because a starting fullback was hurt, powered a fierce header into the net in the 86th minute Monday to give the United States a 2-1 victory over Ghana in its first match of the World Cup.

Afterward, Brooks said that he had dreamed nearly the exact situation two nights ago, the only difference being that in his imagination, he scored in the 80th minute. He did not seem particularly bothered by reality’s six-minute delay.

“It was my first dream,” he said softly, “hopefully not my last.”

Brooks’s header was the dramatic coda to an evening that was a jackhammer of emotions. It opened with exuberance from the Americans after Clint Dempsey scored inside 30 seconds. That was followed by about 80 minutes of nervy, anxious nail-biting as two key players were lost to injury and Ghana pounded at the United States goal. Then came a few moments of disappointment after Ghana tied the game. And finally, there was Brooks, rising to meet Graham Zusi’s corner kick and covering the United States with the warm glow of an upset victory.

The Americans still have a considerable road to navigate to reach the knockout rounds with group games yet to play against Portugal (on Sunday) and Germany (on June 26). Any hope of advancement, though, was predicated on a positive result here. And the United States got one.

“The response after they scored was really good,” midfielder Michael Bradley said. “You looked around and still felt like there was more in it.”

At the final whistle, Coach Jürgen Klinsmann, who had not hesitated to liken this game to a final in terms of importance, ran onto the field, a smile wide across his face. The Ghana players, aware of how critical 3 points here were, sank to the ground in anguish.

“The feelings are just incredible,” the American defender Matt Besler said.

It was that way from the start. Just moments after the game kicked off, Dempsey, the United States captain, saw a pass come his way and let it run, stepping over the ball with his foot before tapping it forward with the inside of his right heel. It was a stylish move, dripping with confidence. The ball now in front of him, Dempsey bore in on goal.

One Ghana player ran across him. Then another. Dempsey cut to the inside and, with a quick finish, suddenly stroked the ball past the goalkeeper and in off the post. Klinsmann and the entire United States bench erupted. In their first game of the World Cup, in a group of sharks, the Americans were leading in roughly the time it takes to mix a caipirinha. Twenty-nine seconds was all that ticked off the clock, the fifth-fastest goal in World Cup history.

“I saw that there was space,” Dempsey said, “and I just tried to hit it as hard as I could.”

As the ball settled into the back of the net, Dempsey took off running. Klinsmann threw his hands in the air. The American fans, who looked to make up half of the crowd of 39,760 at Arena das Dunas, danced in the aisles as the United States was suddenly in the lead.

But the Americans could not maintain their pace. In truth, most of the rest of the game was maddening for the United States as Ghana bossed the ball around the field. Frustration turned to sadness, too, when Jozy Altidore, one of Klinsmann’s top strikers, looked to sustain a serious leg injury. Altidore reached down and grabbed the back of his leg as he sprinted for a ball down the sideline in the 21st minute, a telltale sign of real pain. Klinsmann cradled Altidore’s head in his fingers just before Altidore was taken off on a stretcher, his World Cup participation now murky because of a strained hamstring.

“I was crushed,” Altidore said. “I knew right away I couldn’t continue. It was the worst feeling.”

Things did not improve for the Americans as the minutes passed. Ghana, which eliminated the United States in each of the past two World Cups, hammered on the Americans. Kyle Beckerman was floored by a brutal elbow to the head from Mohammed Rabiu (who was cautioned). Dempsey went down, blood pouring from his nose, after taking a shin to the face from John Boye (who got away undisciplined).

Dempsey played the rest of the game despite struggling to breathe through his nose, saying afterward that he was “coughing up blood a little bit.”

Alejandro Bedoya also looked bothered by a leg injury and so, too, did Besler, one of the two starting central defenders. With Ghana controlling possession and pushing, Klinsmann did not want to risk a gimpy defense, so he pulled Besler at halftime as a precaution. Brooks was the replacement.

The American back line held off Ghana until the 82nd minute. That was when André Ayew beat Tim Howard at the near post from close range.

Deflated as the Americans may have been, they also knew that a tie would still be a good result. Yet Brooks wanted more. And when Zusi’s penetrating corner swung in, the 6-foot-4 Brooks met the ball ferociously, blasting it down and bouncing it past Adam Kwarasey in Ghana’s goal.

Brooks sprinted toward the corner flag and collapsed, as if in a daze. Then he pounded his hands into the ground.

“If you score after just one minute,” Klinsmann said, “you think there can’t be anything better than that.”

But there was. It was something from a dream.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12053052789730870196noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8533474959231198945.post-43112728431814685302014-06-18T08:22:00.004-07:002014-06-18T08:22:34.400-07:00U.S. fans show up in strength for World Cup victory over Ghana

Vice President Joe Biden was among the 39,760 who watched the U.S. beat Ghana in a World Cup opener on Monday at Arena das Dunas. And he must have felt right at home since the stands were full of red, white and blue.

Local media had predicted that as many as 20,000 American fans would show up, and though the U.S. fell short of that number, it nevertheless had a substantial throng. At least a third of the crowd appeared to be on the U.S. side and two of its members were the father-and-son duo of Brad and Chip Robinson from Dallas, who were wearing red, white and blue from head to toe.

"It's really awesome to see that much strength together, united all for one goal," father Brad said.

"It just shows how many Americans do care about soccer," his son added. "There's 20,000 all the way down in Brazil? That shows that they do care."

Both men are members of the American Outlaws, U.S. Soccer's largest supporter group. Brad founded the Dallas chapter five years ago. At the time it was the group's ninth chapter. Today there are 128 with a dues-paying membership of nearly 20,000.

In the days leading up to the game, Natal's beachfront looked like Daytona Beach during spring break. Hundreds of people in U.S. Soccer jerseys — many bearing the name of the missing Landon Donovan — clogged the sidewalks and filled the city's tiny restaurants and bars. And a party hosted by U.S. Soccer and the Outlaws on Sunday night drew nearly 3,000.

"It's a brotherhood, man," Matthew Nunez, a food truck driver from Washington, D.C., said at halftime. "I expected my country to represent."

And the crowds could get bigger. Although more World Cup tickets were sold in the U.S. — 154,000-plus — than in any country outside Brazil, according to Viagogo, the world's largest ticket exchange, there has been a 127% spike in Internet searches for tickets to U.S. games over the last five days.

Beasley makes history

With the opening whistle in Natal, defender DaMarcus Beasley made U.S. Soccer history by becoming the first American to play in four World Cups.

Goalkeeper Kasey Keller and midfielder Claudio Reyna both made four World Cup teams, but Keller did not play a minute in 1990 or 2002 and Reyna did not play in 1994 after being injured.

Beasley, 32, made his World Cup debut in the U.S. opener in 2002. He started two of three games in 2006, then came off the bench for 11 minutes in the final group-play game in South Africa in 2010.

Donovan, who played in the last three World Cups, could have joined Beasley in the history, but he was among Klinsmann's final roster cuts.

The team comes first

Clint Dempsey also had a record-setting night, scoring the fastest goal in the U.S.' World Cup history while becoming the first American to score in three consecutive World Cups.

But afterward all he wanted to talk about was the team. Well, that and his nose, which he thinks is broken.

"Hopefully I'll be able to start breathing through my nose again," he wheezed.

Of the team and the resilience it showed in bouncing back after losing a lead it had held for 81 minutes, he was more was expansive.

"It shows great character," the U.S. captain said. "It's a huge three points for us. I don't think that we played our best game but … everybody played their hearts out."Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12053052789730870196noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8533474959231198945.post-21088797736049776442014-06-18T08:21:00.005-07:002014-06-18T08:21:55.849-07:00Seattle soccer fans let loose with U.S. World Cup victory

The collective roar is what draws us to bars for big sporting events.

The food is more expensive. The beer is more expensive. But the roar keeps us coming back, a community feeling that we’re all in this together, win or lose. The modern-day town square.

That is why hundreds of people crammed around tables inside and outside at The George and Dragon in Fremont. They were all waiting, hoping, for that moment.

By 1:30 p.m., a crowd of about 50 had gathered on the patio in front of one of Seattle’s best-known soccer bars to watch on TV. An hour later, still 30 minutes from kickoff, the place was nearing capacity, and a 10-minute-long line formed to get inside. By kickoff, a line had formed on the sidewalk to grab a coveted patio spot.

It only took a matter of seconds of play for The George and the Dragon to turn into a block party. Twenty-nine seconds into the game, Clint Dempsey, the American captain and Sounders FC star, kept the ball at his feet like it was attached to a string, then fired a shot into the bottom corner of the net.

A couple of beer bottles shattered on the ground. High-fives and hugs were easy to come by. After watching the United States struggle early in games throughout the last World Cup, optimism took hold.

And then it faded, slowly.

By halftime, the conversation at The George and Dragon had turned. The Americans still held the lead, but the word that kept circulating was “survive.”

There had been so much buildup to this World Cup for the United States. Much of it has focused on recycled narratives: Is soccer gaining popularity? Will the Americans finally break through? And some of it has been new: Was Jurgen Klinsmann wrong to say the U.S. couldn’t win the World Cup? Should he have kept Landon Donovan on the roster?

But, finally, all of that faded away into the background, and only the game mattered.

The tension escalated in the 82nd minute, when Ghana tied the score, just as the shadows started to take hold of the patio. A few swear words were yelled. A group of Ghana fans in the corner cheered.

The U.S. appeared to be on the ropes, having hardly thrown a punch since the opening sequence. A tie seemed like a good thing, but not a guarantee.

“We’re in trouble,” a 20-something in a U.S. jersey said to his friend around the 80th minute, and he was not alone in thinking that way.

And then came the moment, the one that will likely overshadow Dempsey’s goal.

When John Brooks headed in the winner in the 86th minute, no one stood still. Most people jumped in the air. Some hugged those next to them. And a few exuberant, alcohol-fueled fans sent their beers flying, splashing those around them as the roar took hold.

No one seemed to mind.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12053052789730870196noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8533474959231198945.post-19104925216393614672014-06-18T08:21:00.001-07:002014-06-18T08:21:17.467-07:00World Cup 2014: ‘Very cool’ Marouane Fellaini praised by Belgium players

Belgium’s players have paid tribute to Marouane Fellaini for coming to their rescue in their opening World Cup match, suggesting that his national side know how to use him better than Manchester United.

Fellaini has endured a miserable time since moving to Old Trafford last summer in a £27.5m deal but equalised for Belgium in their 2-1 victory over Algeria just five minutes after coming off the bench in the second half.

Jan Vertonghen, the Tottenham Hotspur defender who gave away the first-half penalty that handed Algeria the lead, said Fellaini was “very important” to the national side.

“I know there has been a lot of pressure on him from the fans in England but in Belgium he always does well and scores goals,” said Vertonghen. “I’m very pleased for him and I gave him a little hug after the game because I know that goal meant a lot to him.

“Marouane is a very cool guy. The pressure doesn’t really bother him too much. We know how to use him and I don’t know whether they do in his other team.”

Belgium’s captain Vincent Kompany said Fellaini’s qualities had always been apparent in a national shirt.

“Fellaini is a terrific player and any player in his first season at a new club, it can be tough. You have to grant players a couple of seasons before you can judge someone. For us, with Belgium, he has been doing it time and time again. Players like Dries Mertens as well are our weapons coming off the bench.”

Fellaini, who was the only major incoming transfer at Old Trafford last summer but faces an uncertain future under United’s new manager Louis van Gaal, said that Belgium’s substitutes had made a “big impact” on the game. Marc Wilmots introduced Mertens, who scored the winner, at half-time and Fellaini 20 minutes into the second half.

“Everyone knows we have good players, we have a good team, but for the first 30 minutes, we were just so nervous, there was too much stress. I think that is normal for the first World Cup together but in the second half we showed the character of Belgium and we played very well,” he said.

“It was a great goal, it was great for me and for the team. It’s not been the best season for me but football is like this. It is a boost for the confidence of the Belgian team. Algeria made it so tough, but we showed our character and ability.”

The highly fancied Belgians, who struggled in the first half against a well organised Algeria side, face Fabio Capello’s Russia in their second game on Sunday. Kompany admitted nerves played a part in their unconvincing first-half display against Algeria.

“It was the very, very first minutes of any World Cup ever for this generation of Belgian players, all of the players except for Daniel Van Buyten have never been at a World Cup,” he said, admitting that the pressure to perform had an effect.

“Of course for those first 15 minutes, however much experience you have in wider football – I remember even Lionel Messi saying how he had felt the pressure when he first played at a World Cup – so how is it possible for us not to feel it?”

But he said he was proud of his teammates for not panicking when they went behind and for slowly working their way back into the game.

“It means a lot that we overcame a difficult start but as much as it means, we remain calm for the rest of the campaign as well, we know it will be tough against Russia. The biggest mistake we can do is underestimate these teams. Hopefully we’ll do our job and we can qualify and like any team, grow in this tournament.

“After 15 or 20 minutes we got control of the game and then conceded at that moment. We never panicked, we stayed calm. We actually had these kind of scenarios quite often in the qualifiers as well, so that helps.”

Romelu Lukaku, who struggled in the first half and was withdrawn after an hour, said the team was not dynamic enough in the first period.

“We played too slowly in possession in the first half, it was not dynamic enough but in the second half, it was much quicker, we got more crosses in the box and we scored from one,” said the Chelsea striker, who spent last season on loan at Everton.

“It has been so long for us to wait to play at a World Cup and we have a young team as well so we had difficulties in the first hour of the game but then we took it into our hands like a big team should do.”

Lukaku predicted Belgium would learn from the experience and improve as the tournament progressed.

“We showed patience. Most of the players who started were playing for Belgium at 16, 17 or 18. We have shown we can be aggressive, we have shown that even though we are young, we have experience,” he said.

“I think we can play well against anyone – it was good to win and now we can grow into the tournament.”Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12053052789730870196noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8533474959231198945.post-31573409124470431482014-06-01T06:46:00.003-07:002014-06-01T11:24:32.738-07:00Wayne Rooney Won't Take Starting Place in Brazil

Roy Hodgson has urged English football to be less “obsessed” with the performances of Wayne Rooney and has refused to guarantee the striker a place in his first-choice World Cup line-up.

The England manager, who flies with his squad to their pre-tournament base in Miami on Sunday, suggested that beyond his goalkeeper Joe Hart, back four and captain Steven Gerrard, there are five places up for grabs with Rooney not, therefore, an automatic choice.

The 28-year-old has often been England’s main hope going into major tournaments, only to struggle to deliver, and Hodgson is counselling against heaping further pressure on the striker.

“I think it’s a bit sad that the country is so Wayne Rooney obsessed,” Hodgson said. “I don’t think Wayne sets himself up to be anything other than a very, very important member of the squad, someone who does his best and tries his best at all times.

“Talk about combinations doesn’t interest me. All I want is for Wayne Rooney to play well and for Daniel Sturridge to play well and to score and create goals. That’s what we work hard to help them do as a team. But certainly we don’t have the same obsession with Wayne or Daniel. Obviously Daniel and Wayne would like to be the first two names on the list and to do that they’ll have to continue to do well.”

Hodgson said that he was pleased with his forward options after the 3-0 friendly victory against Peru on Friday, having decided on his first-choice goalkeeper and his back four – the same combination who played at Wembley. “Once you get past Steven Gerrard in the midfield, there’s five positions to fill and I think there’s a lot of options there.”

The manager admitted that he felt the pressure to play Raheem Sterling and Ross Barkley, saying they were “two young players who have captured the public’s imagination”, but again declined to offer guarantees. “I’ll have to make decisions on whether to play them or not – I feel that we’re getting stronger as a team and a group all the time.”

England face Ecuador in Miami on Wednesday, then Honduras in their final warm-up match on Saturday before flying to their World Cup base in Rio de Janeiro. There are no injury concerns for Hodgson, with Phil Jones having recovered from his shoulder problem. Jones, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has also recovered from injury, and Rickie Lambert, who has completed his £4 million move to Liverpool from Southampton, are all expected to feature against Ecuador.

Lambert’s club colleague Adam Lallana will undergo a medical in Miami should Southampton accept a £25 million bid from Liverpool, who want a decision within 48 hours or they will turn to other targets.

Hodgson will submit his final 23-man squad list to Fifa on Monday, with John Stones and Jon Flanagan flying to Miami and then, hopefully, remaining with the England squad in Brazil to gain experience.
